Creative Writing Thursday Part1

Over teh next 3-4 weeks I will be writing more than just a poem, I have this story I am trying to get on paper.... so follow along, and enjoy. (And as always add your own writings).

Forgotten Never Be

It was an unusually hot day, late July. One of those days that would make you wish for the coming of fall, or long for what now was those past day of spring, but a hot day nonetheless. On a day like this most people would never be in deep thought, especially when there wasn’t even a breeze to push the stagnate air through the house. But for Elbert he paid it no attention. He was used to the heat, in fact this “heat” that people talked about was truly nothing. “You should live down in the bayous if you want to see what heat is” He’d often think to himself, when others complained. But people were just weak in these days. He often recounted how when he was a child his dad always mentioned “You always know a man’s strength by his ability to do a hard days work. Hard days work, people didn’t even know it anymore. They just sat in there offices with there typewriters. Drones of this ever changing world, making it change ever more. “All the change in this world, its been fine the way it was for years, why do they keep need making change?” Elbert found himself muttering those words out loud as he sat watching the infomercial on his recently installed color Television.

It was getting late in the day, Elbert had let most the day slip away, which was a common occurrence these days but never was true say even five years ago. Five years ago that’s when she passed away, his lovely wife Eloise. He thought of those days gone, on those hottest summer days they would get all the neighborhood kids along with little Tom and drive up to the swim holes, the creek coming out of the mountains. The echoing of those laughing kids, the smile of little Tom; his laughs, he could feel his little hand holding on to his now. His lovely wife, his dear boy Tom, he glanced at their picture sitting on the table next to the house keys.

“Well I’m not getting anything done sitting here. I’ve got to get to the store before it gets dark out” Elbert spoke those words aloud as if someone was there to listen. Grasping his cane he struggled out of the large chair in the living room and began to walk toward the keys. Picking them up he walked towards the door, and in a cumbersome manner opened the door, the screen, and turned locking the door, dropping the keys into his coat pocket.

Any other person couldn’t wear a coat on a hot day in July, but Elbert could. He wasn’t weak like this generation. “This isn’t even heat” he thought. “If people just knew how hot weather I could handle, they would think something of me then”. He grabbed the railing as he stammered down the steps to the street. “This street used to be so quiet.” Not any more though, the hustle and bustle of a street which once was considered a fine part of town now was just crowded out as a thoroughfare to a ever new part of town. The houses people lived in now would have been mansions back in Elbert’s younger days.

He turned up the sidewalk walking in the direction of traffic headed to the corner market. After about 10 minutes of walking he passed Ms. Ellesis place. That one summer many years ago, he had helped her through the whole season with her garden. At that time she was getting up in years. All the other boys his age was off playing ball, taking the best of the summers first fruits as it were. But Elbert’s strong desire to help people had been there since he was younger. She was appreciative for what he had done. But what was on the cover of the paper that fall? Was it what he had done to help her? No it was those boys and there quest to become county champions of football. “Justice is never served!” Elbert shook his cane upward, looking a bit off in the distance, scarring a younger boy on his bicycle. “Sorry son”, shouted out Elbert. The moment had captured him, reminiscing days gone past. But that wasn’t an unusual thing for him. Some times in reality he felt as if he were that age again. But there was always the fact that cane, which had been a part of him for the last fifteen years, always reminded him that he was in no way young anymore.

Just a few more blocks and he arrived at the intersection that took him 3 years of petitions to get this crosswalk put in. The funny thing he couldn’t even use it anymore. The stairs were so steep. Instead he would have to cross over 54th, head down to another older crosswalk at 60th street. He headed down the street to get just across the way. A 5 minute journey turned 15 minutes because of those cursed legs.

“If the old store was here still on this corner that Mr. Wilcox ran was still open, then I wouldn’t have to go through this hassle every week”. It didn’t matter though, Mr. Wilcox had been dead for 20 some years. He would put Elberts paintings up above the produce section when he was younger, in his twenties. The people in town used to even comment about “Elbert Eesse’s produce paintings". He actually had painted a lot of those old paintings in town in various stores. Half the time he just did it because he loved to paint. He had dreamed of being a famous painter one day. That mural he had painted on the building over on 26th was beautiful. Of course that building was destroyed a good thirty years ago.

“Finally this light changes so I can get across this street”, Elbert muttered as he step down from the sidewalk to the hot pavement. It was so hot out that he could feel the heat from street through his leather soled loafers. But this heat wasn’t nothing, down in the bayou… that was heat. Two girls walked by in string bikini tops and cut jean shorts. "My how times had changed. Mother used to always wear that long dark dress working in the fields, with the long sleeves and her boots. And that was even on those hot July days. Those days were so much hotter than this day is, and here this generation feal it's so hot they can’t wear any clothes". Normal thoughts for Elbert on a summer day. As Elbert reached the other side of the street, he looked down and grabbed his vest and buttoned it shut. “This isn’t hot. I’m pretty much better than anyone at standing heat”. He picked up his cane which he had leaned against the old Smitty building and kept walking north toward the shopping center to get his groceries.

As he crossed the street, he entered the shopping center parking lot. The cars whirled around him as he walked toward the front sliding doors. This used to be an open lot where his boy would come play ball. Every Saturday afternoon they would come. Elbert had even built a backstop for them, and an outfield fence. It was a real hit with the kids. They would spend all there summer days there.

As Elbert entered the store the inrush of air conditioned air chilled him to his core, he grabbed the top button and began to button his jacket together. That second button had been missing for the last three years. Used to, Eloise always fixed those missing buttons. But since she had been gone for the last five years, there was basically no one to help at all. For at least the last 10 years of her life, there was actually no one to help them except each other. Neighbors weren't neighbors. There friends and family were all gone. “These people need this frigid air because they are weak. That’s what it is! I should start a school and teach these people how to deal with heat. That would save them all a lot of money!” Elbert finished closing his jacket by buttoning the bottom button.

Come back next week for the next part....

Quote Wednesday Greeneville Edition

A trip home over a long weekend... and we return with quotes:

dad: When I die. I want you to put my ashes in jello. Take it to the zoo, and feed it to the monkeys.

mom: did you say feed it or give it?

dad: Does it really matter Mona?

-Dinner conversation at the Myers home.

... That's what jerm first did when we got a color printer and scanner.

-Dad talking about counterfeit money being made

Work is Hard

-Cameron (6) when asked what he learned in school this week.

A look into the past...

Well back in Greeneville for the weekend. And actually I was shown somethin I have never seen before, the Old Myers - Trobaugh grave yard. My great great grandparents through great great great great grandparents are buried there..... they moved into Greeneville about 1802 from Virginia.

Now that I've looked into my Dad's side of the family... seems they are roughly... 75% german 20% english-irish and 5% french.

And as for jobs... well over and over showing up is farmers, school teachers, and ministers (Lutheran, Methodist, Quaker).

So there ya have it fiting my dad was a teacher, the PO in the hall (ie Minister), and well a farmer... its in our blood.

Not found any rocket scientist yet... but hey look at all that German heritage.

Quote

I wish I would pass out. I want to see what it feels like.

-Stephanie after she heard someone passed out on stage at our special day.

We have to buy a kiddie pool now, to train for a triathlon.

-Darcie after we ran and rode bike for a couple of miles

The Democrats are like RADIOHEAD and the Republicans are like Kylie Minogue. Everybody knows Radiohead are writing better songs, but Kylie is probably selling ten times as many records

-Moby (I hold no political thought on this... but its still a funny statement).

I'm a Cut Up, or maybe I will be...

Source0570D (Small).jpeg

Well, as expected the Bouybee Uybee album was not recieved with great glee... but for those few who get the whole concept... hey good times are to be had.

But I think it's time to move on in my musical career. I've had the bagpipes, which was a big bust, except I made more for them than I paid for them.

Then the guitar, well, it was fun, but my style was questioned.

So I have found the definite best instrument for myself. It hit me this weekend when I was listening to Mercury Rev. The Musical Saw! Thats right, the whole sound is a bit off beat... and well thats what I go for.

So yes, look for future music from this new route, in my non musical musical career.

And on another note... this week you can get buy one get one free board games at Amazon.

Look UP in the ... oh its Sky Friday

IMG_5818 (Small).JPG

The day has come.... Sky Friday. Sky is a good guy... wait I don't like how this has started... sounds like a rhyme. Anyway, skylar is one of those folks who will do whatever ya ask ... (in good reason). Example, see quote Wednesday. Of course another good example is the whole Durian Experience... Sky was the only one man enough to try it (after I asked a few times.... that way we could be in pain together!) He's cool also helpin ya out if ya really need something... But lets put it frankly.. Sky is just funny... and likes to laugh... a good guy.

Thinking back there are alot of memories with Sky...

Of course who can forget "Still Works Baby, Yeah" The classic videos

Or who could forget that night I stole his car, and he chased me non stop for a good 2 hours... (If I hadn't jumped off that ravine onto the railroad tracks, I think he may have had me).

But there is one certainty.. Sky is a city boy. He may never forgive me for the 18 mile Hike I took him on to a volcano without water. He was in so much pain he said "My face is Numb" still don't understand that one... but ah well... guess he was dehydrated good times, and he survived (although he declared never to go hike with me again ... (although I had him thinking about the November Death March. True He's better suited playing video games I guess... (who else would carry a TV to Tennessee so he could be sure to have his own TV to play video games on).

(ha... then there was that time we went to the circuit assembly when I first moved here... wow we ragged that little Cavalier out... haha). ah the look on Sky's face as we drove across that median...

Oh and He did great on his #4 last week.. keep up the good work...

So that's sky, a funny guy... the inventor of many expressions,

Add your stories about Sky, the Entertainer...

Taking One for the Team...

outback.jpg

Wanna eat free at outback? Well you've probably seen those emails that if you forward to 100 others you get a free meal... does those work? No... but the following does....

You've heard of taking one for the team... You know a sacrifice so that all can benefit. I've been there in the restaurant scene before. Comes to mind, the day I had a glass of coke poured in my lap... which led to a 1/2 price ticket at Pizza Hut....

But again yesterday?

Well we went to the New Outback Steakhouse... the grand opening. Well we were livin it up, ya know appetizers, meal... etc. But then... our salads never came out! Yes that’s right we didn't get our salad until our meal came! OK, at this point you are like... so... uh... this doesn't sound to tragic. And it wasn't we, didn't mind... ah but the restaurant did... as word got out that our salads came out... shear pandemonium spread among the workers... and managers... Multiple apologies.

But it went further than roughly 40-50 I am sorry comments, and managers basically stalking us for the rest of the meal to make sure everything was perfect....

Then came the Manger that was from another part of the state....

"I'm very sorry for what has happened with your salad. We are trying to figure out why they came out late. And WHEN WE DO FIND OUT... we will shoot that person if you like. As you know something like this would never happen at any outback."

OK at this point its becoming surreal... but it would go further..

"...So tonight everyone who had salad, since it came out at the same time as your entree... That will be free. But that only makes it up to those who had starter salads, for the rest of the table, the appetizers are free. Also, you all can get any desert you want. I am so sorry your salads did not come out"

In the end they gave us $60 worth of food, because ... our salad was late? Wow...

So what is the moral of the story. Well I'm pretty sure I don't want to work at outback, if messing up when salads come out bring on that much heartache... And two, if you do eat at Outback, order a salad, it may be late.. and then everything is free! And also as Tre stated, hope they drop some food on you... because if that happened, they would probably give you half ownership in the franchise.

Bouybee Uybee Available Now...

albumcoverbouybee.jpg

Well it may have been a while since you have heard anything from Bouybee Uybee, (Pronounced Bob Ub, for the new comers) and probably you are happy about this whole matter. But it seems the critics have picked up Bouybee's latest album, and what they are saying is quiet shocking... or then again maybe it isn't. The review over at JMC site tells it all...

Bouybee Uybee brings in back up support of Juice Mouse Zero on this latest outing. Songs so catchy, you'll hate them... but still sing them... its like a cup of coffee for a caffeine attic.

Today is a good day for the music world though. The CD is now being released beyond its original distribution of 4 disc.

So jump on the band wagon and see what reviewers are talking about:

"Its like Wesley Willis has gone folk"

-Canadian Jet

"I can't get those songs out of my head"

-Former Hair band Musician

"Yeah you go ahead and call that music, I'm going to learn to play guitar"

-ADGI

But Now you can own the incredible album!

Enjoy....

John Michael (from) Montgomery Friday

IMG_9591 (Medium).JPG

Why John Michael Friday? Why not? Actually, I've not spoke to him in quiet sometime... But John is the Brother of Amber who you may remember from Back When in the People archieves...

He of course has that intrinsic unique Ledbetter Style.

So this past summer while in NYC at Bethel. I was sitting there, and there comes JM. What ensued was an evening trying to capture the best of what is NYC. Of course the subways, and playing accordions on the subways trying to make money... (no one ever put money in my hat on the floor). A standard trip to China Town (where JM got the stylish chinese hat to advert the pouring rain).

Then we headed out for some eats.. first to one of the most famous deli's of NYC. Katz's Deli It was in When Harry met Sally (The Movie)... and has been a NYC standard for over 125 years. Its a classic deli, with meat hanging and what not... grab you a pastrami on rye... whats on it? Pastrami, Rye and Mustard... But the Pastrami is piled up like 7 inches no joke... its insane!

Oh yeah then we headed out for the best cheese cake in NYC. It was at Junior's in Brooklyn. (Ya know where P Diddy, made making the band folks walk to get him cheesecake).

Any way so ended a night of eating, harassing the locals... and well... an evening with JM.

Add your John Michael (from) Montgomery Stories. (OK he's not really from Montgomery, but its really close.

Advancing Confusion Through Poetry

I hope you understand
all these thoughts in my head
what I'm trying to Say

I said this line already
I'll say it again
My thoughts always flowing
From the present to the again

I feal I'm speaking circles
My thoughts are all around
But when they come out
They're just cyclic, round

I said this line already
I"ll say it again
Wheels in my head turning
Thoughts my mouth outcoming

Confusing it may be
these words I call poetry

Is it really poetry?
Probably Not.

Does what I say make sense?
Probably Not.

What I'm trying to say
all these thoughts in my head
I hope you understand
