Quote Wednesday (After Newyork)

"I believe anyone who can breathe fire can take care of themselves on the streets of New York"

-Jared (My Hawaiian Roommate at Bethel, after I told him not to worry if I didn’t come back from a trip into the Bronx).

City Mouse/Country Mouse

dragonfly (Small).jpg

Well one of the greatest shocks to the system for someone as myself being in the greatness of a city such as New York, is the lack of country. It is amazing really the difference of what we all view as "normal". And I believe the difference in these things between a person raised in the country and city is most notable. A few examples...

There was a family in a congregation in the Bronx that took their kids to the ocean a few weeks ago. When they arrived their, the kids were afraid to get out of the car. They didn’t know what all the green stuff was (the grass). They were afraid it would hurt them.

Also one day while we were working in the building doing demolition, a huge dragonfly flew in the building. (Here is an excellent website to teach you about Dragonflys). And true it was of unusual size (wingspan about 4.5 inches), I don’t believe it required the shrieking and fear it brought upon the brothers I was with. (It was a Male Green Darner, an amazing lil bug which can actually fly up to 35 mph). I walked over to take a look and picked him up. Well what the reaction that brought. "Its gonna kill you man... you're crazy" shouted one brother from the LA area. To see him inch up in fear like a 3 year old was truly amazing. "How did you catch that... you're crazy dude!" It was just so odd to me that these people had never even seen such a creature. But they did appreciate it for its amazing beauty, creation of such variety and wonderfulness. Truly to be enjoyed for all times!

As I told him, one day he'll pick them up and not think of it at all, but true it may take a good 500-600 years for him to reach that point.

So alas, I retreat glad to have being raised in the country not a feared of the world which surrounds us that many people forget to notice, and sometimes never stop and pickup.

Encouragement is Always Nice!

CRW_8829 (Small).jpg

Joe and Rose Lubeck, incredible examples of kingdom service. Last time at Bethel I had the privilage of visiting them with a friend. On my visit this time, I once again saw them (its hard to forget their distinguished smiles, and differences in size). I had to relate to them the fact I had met a brother in South Africa who had one of Brother Lubecks famous coin purses. (He originally made these out of scrap Bible leather). But these little coin pursues can be found owned by people all over the world). If you see one you know that person has visited the Lubecks bookstudy.

Of course it is an amazing life these two have led. Brother Lubeck has been serving in Bethel Service for 65 years. Sister Lubeck has been for 43 years. But there is more to their story. Brother Lubeck had left his native Saskatchawan to visit the US, and see what it was like. As he arrived in the US, he made his way to San Diego, on a very adventures hitchhike down. Once their, he needed work. As he aquired where the employment office was, he headed out. However, when he arrived at the address it turned out to be a Kingdom Hall instead. Feeling Jehovah was proding him, he decided to go on to the Hall. The brothers told him they had work to be done at the hall, and that he could stay there. A couple of weeks later Judge Rutherford needed some help at the Societies Mansion in California. The brothers recommended Lubeck. After two weeks Rutherford told Lubeck just to bring his things the following week and stay.

Joe served as a grounds keeper. He didn’t always agree with Rutherford on the way to keep the garden. Rutherford was a stickler for keeping anything that was to grow, Lubeck was in desire of strait furrows. This would be a differnece that would lead to Rutherford reminding Lubeck who gave the direction, and Lubecks conceding to the thought.

Joe was asked to remain, but he would need to apply for Bethel service. However when approached by Rutherford on this matter, Lubeck stated he wasn’t sure he wanted to do this. Rutherford responded “Well that’s somehting you’ll have to take up with Jehovah then.” Soon Joe’s application was submitted.

As Rutherford passed away he desired to be buried at the estate in California, and Joe would dig the grave for such. However the city of Sand Diego would not agree with this and therefore Rutherford found his resting place in Staten Island.

Joe headed to bethel in New York in 1944. An hour after arriving he found himself in the factory working. Joe and Rose continue in their Kingdom Service on today. Getting up for work on a daily basis even though in their Late 80’s. A great example, if you ever get a chance to meet and speak with this couple, you will no doubt be upbuilt and encouraged by their example.

So... Misconstrued... A brief Pause in the Break.

bird nyc (Medium).jpg

Well as we speak (I type you read... ok much later... anyways..)... as we speak...I'm sitting looking at the New York Skyline on some randow internet connection i found floating around here in the city. Now true sitting in the city at night typing on a computer is probably not viewed as smart by many... but well I can handle it. Oh and it creats nice benefits, I just had a nice 15 minute conversation with some crazy woman, she told me she had turned her date down, because her house was a mess, and she's fat tonight... and she's tired of teaching.... and... oh well interesting new york people.

Well several have wondered what I am doing, I am swining a sledge hammer and running a jack hammer about 75% of the time. Hard work? Yes! Very very very very very very very hard work. But its good for me... well other than the major bleeding from todays chipping of tile... (ah wounds just lead to future stories (still glad I have a scar from lava in hawaii). Anyway, all this heavy work, you would think I would be lean trim and fit now. And while I am certain I have more muscle, with all the awesome bethel food (and the need to consume massive amounts to have energy to make it through the day, well...) I seem to be about the same.

But bethel has been great, met great guys from all over, and seen friends i've not seen in a few years again. Went to a spanish bookstudy in the Bronx, commented... no one laughed. Went last night to a hall and taught kids all kinds of tricks, they were all crowded around me... it was great fun. Pulled out my pen, and started writing ont hem, ok

three guys are in a race, a blind man, a crippled man, and a deaf man...

hahahah

gotta love kids.

And also, I"m happy to report I have not elbowed any of the governing body in the stomach. (At least so far...) Sorry brother Pierce for that last time... oops.

As for latest news... well its all over now, but this week we had a special announcement, about our brothers in Russia. To learn more, see jw-media.org
Also read this news article These days we all find out the major stuff at the same time, thanks to the power of the net!

Oh, and the photo section has a few new pics for you to enjoy as well.. all take care, I have to get in bed, for my Half day Saturday of Sledge Hammer fun, then its off to shakespear in the park, or a Mets game...

Rocket Science? Yes I've Been There

biz_rocket.jpeg

Well I just rolled back into town from a week of Rocket Science. Thiokol in Utah is the home of the RSRM (Reusable Solid Rocket Motor) for the Space Shuttle. I was there working a few test for return to flight. So yes now its official I am a rocket scientist I guess. Anyway, if you want to read about he event, visit the Salt Lake City Tribune's Site

Unfortunatly, I didnt get to actually watch the thing fire. I sat in the control room, underground, ready to fix any unexpected problems on our test. I did feel the sonic boom though even underground. I gave my approval for the firing, but passed on the opportunity to start the firing.

Also I discovered, a very notable conclusion about Utah on this trip. Food is not important in anyway to people in Utah. From the comment at one restaurant "This is not Burger King, You can't have it your own way" to the fact its hard to find a restaurant its very impossible to dine in style.

Yet today we did happen upon a classic in the area of Salt Lake City. Hires Big H. This is a drive in that was packed out, as we passed the long line made me assume we had happened upon something rare for Salt Lake City, good food. (Sizzler is their Main Chain, enough said).

Anyway, it was a unique treat. From the "Mormon Cocktail" (A rootbeer float). To the homemade rootbeer (every restaurant is proud of their root beer out here. And the homemade fries tasted like the ones Mamaw used to make! And finally the local favorite, a pastrami burger. (Everything was fresh (including the “famous bun”… a rare thing in today frozen food world). There is a reason it is famous. It was the best meal I had in Salt Lake (Yes, Hamburger and Fries). So if you visit Salt Lake, don’t expect the importance of food found in the south. No its just a side thought, oh yeah... I need to eat today sometime.

Sincerity... thats all that matters

Tonight at the meeting in Utah, I heard the most sincere singing of all time at a meeting. So there is a kid, 7ish. Imagine a 7 year old speaking as loud as he can in a very monotone voice to you. Then imagine him singing like that at the top of his lungs.

This is what I experienced. Honestly I had a hard time making it through the songs, for such a strong desire to laugh. And through out the hall everyone just smiled, and all the little kids just looked back at him. Does this happen every meeting? I dont know, but wow what a unique singer.... that is sincerity.

A Solar Venus Encounter

untitled.bmp

Ah I almost forgot to remind everyone about this, and then Jillian reminded me. Tomorrow morning in the Eastern US, you will be about to see Venus cross in front of the sun. You will see a little dot which will be Venus transversing the path between the earth and the sun. While not to exciting just a few years ago (150ish) this was used to create a better understanding of the size and shape of the solar system. So if you are up early, dont miss this event (it will be over at 6:34 CST AM)... or sleep in and enjoy it later (well 12 years from now)

and remember

DONT STARE AT THE SUN! (You will go blind very very fast... go borrow your neighbors welding goggles (because everyone’s neighbor has welding goggles).

Two Things I love...

...A good deal, and music. Its that time of year, when concerts abound, with the heat of the summer days. If you aren't familiar with it, every summer Nashville shares music with all for a low price. For a mere $5 (You cant beat that price... ok ok $4.95 would beat that price...) But anyways

Dancin in the District, coming Soon! (See thier site)

(By the way if Atlanta is closer, a lot of the same bands play for $5 at their own Friday evening shows "on the bricks" (check out the site)).

This years line up and my recommendations:

6/19/04
Cake

(The worst concert I ever went to was Cake, they performed horribly, but then again its cake, makers of some of the best albums ever. So for $5 you have to go to this one. (I'll be in New York though so enjoy this one with out me).

6/26/04
Fuel

(Should be a good rockin concert... I've heard they are decent live, and they did create one of the better albums of the 90's with Sunburn)

7/17/04
Everclear

(If there was ever a band which had ever album sound the same it was everclear... If you dont have alot going on, you may want to try it out... You'll know the songs at least).

7/24/04
Collective Soul

(Last weekend someone popped in the Collective Soul CD (OK, it was an mp3 and they added it to the play list, anyway it reminded me of their strong sound they had back in the day, I'd give $5 to check their sound).

8/21/04
Blondie
The Psychedelic Furs
Luna Halo

(Now if you dont go to any of these shows. You do not want to miss this one! You get to classic bands Blondie and Psychedelic Furs, both past their prime but not to be missed for sure!).

So there you have it make your plans now. Enjoy the show. And hey maybe we'll run into each other.

Creative Writing Thursday

Today’s writing takes me back a few years: to a writing. Enjoy- well not really. I remembered this poem after I ate some of the worst jelly beans on earth this weekend. (Particularly Vomit Flavor and Sardine Flavor jellybeans should never have been invented).

And don’t forget to add your creative writing

EW!

Some Things are Bitter
Some Things are Sweet

When you taste the former
You'll see its no treat

Earwax definitely isn’t the later
Its the most former type of matter

In the News...

Well I'm off to New York in a couple of weeks. So I was looking at the finer eating establishments of the city. Seems that a good choice is the Omelets!

A New York Restaurant has an omelet available at a mere $1000. True it includes 10 ounces of fine caviar valued at $65 an ounce. For the frugal, there is a $100 version with only 1 ounce of caviar.

So... speaking of caviar and delicacies? More on that in the near future
