Awarded for a writing.

May2004NTB03 copy (Small).jpg

Its creative writing Thursday, this week, I go the wrote of technical Writing.... For I was actually published in NASA tech briefs, describing my design of a two stage solenoid. (Got an award for it this week too...) (You can read the book if you like... I have it at my house, all 120 pages of great reading). Anyways, here is the article, well a page the article is on

Book signings coming at a later date.

Add your writings for this Thursday.

Good job on getting published. Sweetness. I read the first paragraph. Looks good. I'll assume it's pretty awesome since you got an award for it.

Anyway I dont have time to mess with my creative writing right now but later.

I'm all about the creative writing, and now since I'm out for the summer, I got nothing but time. Which means this should at least be decent right? Wrong. Wrong.

The only thing worse than getting kicked while you're down,
is counting all the people who gathered round,
to spectate, participate, motivate,
the ever growing hate,
that nestles in your heart.
So when you see them, you play your part.
You just take names and think about later,
when you'll enough time to cater,
to the anger and rage that builds inside,
shortening your lifespan but when you die,
they'll never forget,
but your only regret,
that you were forever a slave
to that which you carried to the grave
all the rage,
wrath anger whatever you save,
in your memory controls what you do,
and in turn the memory takes control of you.
Its harder to forgive and let it go,
but the longer you hold, when it finally explodes,
your whole world will implode.
By then everyone who did know,
won't care and will have told you so.
So grin, bear it, and just move on,
Everything gets better if you don't hold on.

I did not get an award, or even get to go to NYC for the presentation last year, actually I am not sure if I even wrote any of this, but it was all my research that they used, and my name is on the credits so I thought that was close enough to cut/paste and share with y'all:

Barnett, M. O., T. Radu, J. K. Yang and J.C. Hilliard (2003). Transport of As(III) and As(V) in experimental subsurface systems. Presented at 226th American Chemical Society National Meeting, New York, NY.

Abstract
"Sources of arsenic in natural groundwater may be both geogenic (i.e., natural) and anthropogenic. In order to understand the migration of arsenic in the subsurface, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms of arsenic adsorption and desorption processes and their effect on transport. Although the adsorption of arsenic to solid phases has been relatively well studies in batch systems, arsenic adsorption dynamics are much different in column studies with flowing water. The goal of this study was to investigate the adsorption and transport of arsenite [As(III)] and arsenate [As(V)] in experimental subsurface systemscontaining iron-coated sand. Column studies examined the effect of pH, flow rate, and phosphate on arsenite/arsenate mobility. The pH effect was examined by comparison of experiments performed at both pH 4.5 and 9. The increase in pH led to a significant increase in arsenite adsorption but decreased arsenate adsorption. In addition, both arsenite and arsenate exhibited rate-dependent transport in the columns. The competing effect of phosphate was examined by introducing phosphate solution to the column with adsorbed arsenite/arsenate and vice versa. The results indicated that phosphate decreased arsenite's/arsenate's ability to adsorb on iron coated sand with a resulting increase in mobility. In general, but not under all circumstances, arsenite adsorbed less and was more mobile than arsenate. These results have significant implications to the subsurface behavior of arsenic in both natural and contaminated environments."

And who thought dirt couldn't be fun and exciting!!

Ahhhh poetry! The product of inspiration, frustration, humiliation, admiration, meditation, imagination,(sometimes medication)...it has a negative correlation to the Reagan Administration, for it ain't some political relation but rather the artistic creation of conversation... but without further procrastination, here's my interpretation in poetic communication(what d'ya think? Over the top?):

Sailed upon the seas and skies
And a wooden siren fell on the floor
Denying the path for stepping over
To reach the embrace you've stumbled for
Six window panes to clumsily shatter
To scatter on miles of open road
Six more days to escape this pretense
Six more tries to arrest the matter
Are you bold to persevere
Or a coward set upon a dream
To fail to know what's partially there
Or succeed in taking what's truly here
Fact has won this disregard
The object's not seen thru refracting glass
Nor the full scope of three blundering hearts
Can be divided into equal parts

Good work Jeremy (and I believe everyone else should be compelled to appreciate his work... ) [I mean, he's working with arsenic absorption studies... so you'd better stay on his goodside...)

And like the intro rhyme for sure Nina... and it has everything to do with the Reagan Administration

She appears as an apparition. He sees her there in front of their large house with their two beautiful kids. She is standing, looking at him. He begins to walk to her through the gate of their perfect white picket fence and she smiles, as he does. He steps up close in front of her and whispers softly, “I love you.” She replies with a smile, but before she can say anything, she disappears. The house is next, followed by the two children. He is alone.
He comes to himself and realizes that he’s still only sitting alone in his home at his piano, dreaming hopelessly. He shakes his head and sighs, looking down at the keyboard. He feels tears but he holds them back for his own sake and starts playing random notes, making random little songs.
He hears her behind him. She walks up and takes his hand. Before he experiences happiness, he remembers that she is nothing more than a phantom. He sighs again and looks down at the keyboard and begins playing more random notes but stops after a few seconds. A tear hangs, falls, explodes upon a piano key. She puts her arm around him slowly and whispers, “Please don’t stop playing... I want to hear how it ends.”

Just to let you know Jerm, Muse is coming to Nashville July 28. Check out there site for more.

Isn't that Curiosa that Muse is coming with, Sir Keats?

As for Creative Writing, I like Nina's rhyme, and Javann and Jon's last lines.

Here's mine por la dia de creatividad:

We will cut straight and not stop until we reach bone

We will not stop until we reach blood and marrow and run and bleed and drown in rain;

Until we burn and tear and live you over like a hit and run, smoldering and broken in the wake of us

Because together we are invicible

Together we are insurmountable

Together, we are undeniable in this, our rAzorblAde Summer

I am really looking forward to listening to the new Hives album. Anyone heard it yet? Thoughts?

D.A.

Curiosa is known about and its tickets are gotten.

Oh lordy, Jerm...you ain't gonna believe this. Failed Day II, anyone? Sorry for the long post, just skip it if the following means nothing to you, but I think that those who were there will appreciate it:

"Field Day, Round Two?
July 15, 2004 12:24 AM - Posted by dylan
For those amongst you that are true gluttons for punishment, it appears that promoter Andrew Dreskin is attempting to get another Field Day going.

According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, Dreskin has applied to host another Field Day, this time in the tiny town of Red Hook (upstate, not the Brooklyn version). The proposed festival will feature three days of camping and two of music, featuring artists such as "Radiohead, the Beastie Boys, and Spearhead" (?). Other bands that have been mentioned are Norah Jones, R.E.M., Coldplay, and Tom Waits.

I wanted to run two quotes by you, before we continue... This one's from Norman Greig, who explains why this Field Day will be different than the other concert the town just denied permits to:

Greig said the Field Day event will be different because of Dreskin's experience as a promoter and the fact he put on a successful ''Field Day'' show last year at Giants Stadium. In the past, Greig has said events like the proposed music festival were one of the key ways for him to bring in income and preserve his farm space.

And this one, from Dreskin:

"Field Day was widely seen as the most innovative modern rock music festival in the United States in 2003," Dreskin said.

As you may recall, last year, Field Day was to be a two-day festival that was to take place in a giant field on Long Island. Radiohead was to headline one day, The Beastie Boys the other. The rest of the lineup was fairly amazing as well. It was to be lovely. Then, it turned out that the sleepy little town of Calverton didn't really want 40,000 people flying around after all, so they denied the permits. Unfortunately, they did this about a week before the show.

After a bit of panic, it was announced that the concert was moving to Giants Stadium (!) in Jersey, and that half the bands would drop out. Oh, and (almost) all tickets were void, you had to buy new ones. TicketMaster refunded the ticket price, but not the surcharge. Fans then had to pay another surcharge, plus a massive ticket rush delivery fee, because TM didn't want 30,000 people standing at will call.

The only people who didn't get hosed were those of us who purchased our tickets from the w.a.s.t.e. presale, as the w.a.s.t.e gang was kind enough to swap 'em out for us at no charge, set up their own will-call, and get us prime floor seats.

Naturally, it was cold, wet, and poured rain all day. The stage was left over from the Hot 97 Summer Jam, and the sound was mostly not very nice. The stadium was 80% empty for most of the day, and only 40% full at the peak. Liz Phair played the worst set in the history of festivals, Beck ended up getting hit by a piece of equipment and didn't play at all, the Beasties took wayyyy too long to set up, and the evening was redeemed solely by our boys in Radiohead, who played the most amazing set I've ever heard. Thom's wail in '2+2=5' was the turning point in the evening for everyone I've spoken to.

In the end, Thom's quote said it all- "We're very sorry it's come to this".

Of course, one last jab came from event security, who did not allow Radiohead to play their standard multiple encores (or, rumour has it, bring Beck out onstage for a little acoustic action) because they didn't want to pay overtime.

The moral is, everyone I know (myself included) had a great time all in all. However, everyone I know (and people I didn't) walked out saying "NEVER AGAIN."

That said, the majority of what happened was not the promoter's fault, so take my harshness with a grain of salt.. Pneumonia does that. Besides, last year being a debacle or not, if he can get Radiohead, Tom Waits, R.E.M., and some other comparable bands back, you can bet I'll be there, in line, ready to go. With tickets from w.a.s.t.e.."

I've not heard much buzz about the Hives next album, but I wasn't too big a fan of their last album. Not to be cliche, but there wasn't enough of a variety in their last album for me. If you're going to do songs that are all of the same type and tempo, you have to do them all well. And I don't feel that they did. Of course, I'll probably have my skin peeled off alive for that last statement, but I stand by my weakly formed opinion and wait to be told otherwise.

hahahahahha

the only thing succesful was failed day...

and i believe it is time the world knew the real story... jon.. we must release the video. we must cretae a website...

yeah...

its failed day 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this time we want blood! Dreskins!

Succesful...ha

For real. Did that dude read the reviews he got for his "successful" festival? Holy cow. And if he thinks he'll get Radiohead again... ha... ha on all counts. Release the video! Hard!

"this time we want blood!"

Heh heh...you know me, always posting things to rile the masses.

"I've not heard much buzz about the Hives next album, but I wasn't too big a fan of their last album."

The reason you haven't heard much buzz is that they have been very tight lipped about it. Basically, the band disappeared off of the scene and none of the tracks except Walk Idiot Walk were leaked off of the new album, Tyrannosaurus Hives. For some reason I love the new album cover. The look on all of the boys faces sort of says it all about what they are trying to do:

Be the cockiest band of well dressed hooligans in rock.

As far as doing all songs well of the same type and tempo, I just found them to be fun. Are they innovative? Are they genius? No, but they have the machismo to come out and say, "We are the best band in the world, and if you don't think so, we don't need you", then back it up with everything they've got. Not overproduced Creed/everything on X-treme radio, but all that you personally have to throw at music. Can't really sing? Howl! Can't play complicated riffs? Play simple, but play intense and make it worthwhile and have a good time doing it.

When I want good time, rockin', "not a lot of thought just drive" music, I often turn to the Hives for the reason that Jon brought out when he guest authored on TKF: Resonance. I want to feel that feeling and if a certain band is that feeling, then in they go.

However, they aren't going to make any money off of CD sales to me, because...well, that's another story. If I like you, I will go long distances to see you play and be a part of the feeling/dynamic you create. That's how you make money off of me.

And to anyone in the Nashville region, are you going to see Rainer Maria in Murfreesboro next week?

D.A.

This life fashioned out of lies
Vindicating all the wrong things
Living in disguise
And you are breaking everything
The relics of our time
Trying to cover everything that is mine
So serve it up before it's cold
Enough of waiting
Concentrating on your heart of gold
Maybe clearly
Maybe it's disavowed
You are a breaker
You broke me somehow
On my knees and I am begging
For you to give some more
I keep seeing you
Looking to adore
Looking to be crushed
Looking to be burnt
Knowing that I must
Find my lesson learnt
I'm okay without you

i agree... you will get my money at a show (well thats questionable with the media pass thing...) and rainer maria... sounds like a small show! hmm may be media pass time.

I could go to Rainer Maria. I have no clue who they are but if they're in Mburo that spells cheap show. When and where exactly?

they are cool, and come misconstrued recomended

Rainer Maria:

Saturday, July 24. 8 PM. 8 bux. Red Rose Cafe.

I would suggest getting there a little early because they are doing a rare local pre-sale for tickets to this show, and it might sell out. The sound at Red Rose sucks, but its a great little place and you can ALWAYS meet and talk to the bands there because there's no where for them to hide :). Rainer Maria (who got their name from the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, also someone you should definitly check out) put on one of the best shows that I have seen live. Hopefully they will hold up to that on this tour.

Last time I saw them was in a little bar in Buffalo called Mohawk Place. The guitarist usually moves and jumps around a LOT, and the stage area (which was litterally a hole in the wall of the bar with 7 foot ceilings) was way too small. It was the last show on their tour and he really wanted to move around, so to get some of the angst out, he commenced to start busting holes in the walls and ceiling with the head and bottom of his guitar.

Rock and flippin' Roll, kiddies...check out Artificial Light, the first song off of their last album.

D.A.

Yeah, it's curiosa. But hey, it's Muse....

... and hey we'll be there.. wanna go?

I'll havo to check to see if the wife will let me and wheteher or not I work that night - but yeah, that would definitely be down my alley. I'll get back to you on this one.....
