A Movie Review... What? It rarely comes...

Well believe it or not I went to a movie last night. (The first since X-Men 2 (which was a really good movie)
This time I saw Spider Man 2 to be exact. And well I have to admit my dissatisfaction of Comic Movies Continues. I have always been a Marvel Comics fan. And honestly the best part of the Spider Man 2 movie was the opening credits with the impressively coordinated Marvel Comic logo, and the Spiderman comic images/and score.
But you ask why Jeremy? Well everyone (most everyone) liked the movie. But I found it a struggle since it was once again such a predictable movie. The only things that were not predictable is when they chose to fix some eternal problem, in a illogical, impossible way. (Impossible being used beyond the world of superheroes). Remember superheroes live in our world, so the physics of the world shouldn’t change. Just what is possible for the superhero.
So this brings us to the next problem, I'm an engineer, I analyze, I figure out. (Which 95% of the movie can be figured out a few minutes before it happens). (Even 30% of the exact lines could be guessed before they were said). So I blame the curse of being an engineer on maybe my lack of interest in the movie. (But it did allow me to know what Eigenvalues are during the class scene).
So final thought:
Overall clean movie: Yes
Good Plot: No (Predictable)
Good Directing: Yes/No
Cinematography: Yes
Acting: No (Toby Keith is a bad country singer, other Toby's such as Spider Man shouldn’t be superheroes. How can one guy be so lame until he puts on a spandex suit?)
Humor: (Didn’t need to be in the movie in a blatant form)
(Someone explain why Spidey made an actual spiderweb to talk to Mary Jane on?) A steal one none the less... I have you caught in my Web Mary Jane... there is no escape... now kiss me.
Final Score:
If you liked Spider Man 1 you'll like Spider Man 2. If you almost liked spider man 1 you'll like Spider Man 2.
Rating: 2.5 Stars of 5.
OK so now I've Riled the masses, feel free to give your review.

I also went and saw this one last night. Not bad. There. That's a great review.

Okay, first of all I think Toby Keith is a great country singer, he has gotten to patriotic since 9/11 though. Hey, I may not listen to country music anymore, but I still have my favorites and he is one of them.
As for the other Toby I never liked him as an actor which is one of the reasons why I didn't want to see the first one and the fact that I was never a fan of comic book movies either. Suprising though that when Kevin and I saw it we actually liked the movie. Maybe because I was expecting it to be bad helped.
So anyways I haven't seen 2 yet so I can't rate the movie. I will end up waiting until it comes out of DVD though.

Not everything has to have a meaning...sometimes its nice to turn off the brain for two hours or so and watch really good special effects and go wow, that was pretty cool.

I agree. That's the basic use I give to movies and TV in general, actually (and yes I put movies and TV in the same catagory). But yeah sometimes it's nice to give the brain a rest.
But Jerm, come on. Toby was a good Peter Parker. Have you just not seen the cartoon? Read the comics? I know you've read the comics! Dude's a nerd as a facade. He could do those things all the time but no, he's in nerd mode without the costume. Does Clark Kent fly around like a poser while he's sporting his suit and tie? Of course not.

First off, I did love Toby (not Jerry) Maguire as Peter Parker for all the reasons Jon-o mentioned. He nailed the whole "I'm really a geek thing" and still managed to pull off the "I'm cool in spandex" bit. I mean, when I try to pull off the "I'm cool in spandex" thing my wife just laughs at me - so it is really much harder than it looks.
Second, the whole point off comic movies is that there is supposed to be a blurred sense of reality - it can't be taken too seriously. Some movies are made to be realistic, some to be completely fake. Comic movies are supposed to mix the two. Before entering the theater you have to numb your brain a little. Otherwise you don't like th movie. Unfortunately for you, Jerm, and engineer lacks this capability (and there's nothing wrong with that).
Lastly, please, please, please remember that while Amber is my sister I do not necessarily reflect the same beliefs or tastes she so obnoxiously holds. Toby Kieth? Why? And what posessed you to aknowledge the fact you like his music?
Posted by: keats | July 1, 2004 12:14 PM
What is wrong with his music??? I like is voice and I like his songs. He is diffrent. When you hear him you know it is Toby Keith, unlike your music who I still have to ask Kevin what it is.
By the way...I really miss going to the movies with you. We always had the same taste in movies and had so much fun at them. Don't you remember Wild, Wild West? Seven Years in Tibet? What about our Patch Adams experience? Great times huh?

i saw the movie last night too and almost did a review on TKF today but then i realized that i wouldnt want to relive a movie that i didnt enjoy, i wish i could have those 2 hours back.
I agree with you Jerm that this is a very predictable movie and you dont have to be an engineer to figure out the cheesey lines and plot twists before they happen.
and please, please spiderman, keep your mask on, if he took it off one more time i would have had to walk out of the movie.
1/2 a star....
wait for TV/DVD, and make your friend pay

So, what everyone is saying is that you should save your eight bucks and never see it? Or is it really worth renting?
Posted by: Susan | July 1, 2004 06:53 PM
Hey why do you guys not invite everyone?
Posted by: Uhmm I wasn't invited | July 1, 2004 08:42 PM
I liked it. I mean if you're going for the return of shakespear or Wilde then don't bother, but odds are you wouldn't be going to see a comic book movie for that anyway. It was good for what it was, it was great for what it was in my opinion. Most of the Batmans and X-mens and et cetera super hero movies are all cheesy "hey we've got super powers now for some corny one liners, hot women, and then cheesily choreographed fights with rock music, likely followed by some poignant moments of self discovery!"
But something I liked about Spiderman is that even though it does have alot of that it does something none of the others do. It makes Spiderman seem human. You never feel sorry for Wolverine just because he can't remember his past when he was engineered to be a superweapon through torturous military procedures, because that's not we go through often. However we can all feel sorry for Peter Parker working part time jobs, trying to go to college, no time for a social life, his aunt is having financial trouble, nobody appreciates him, he comes home tired, broke, beat up and alone. I think alot of people here can sympathize with him in some way or another. Which really makes him seem like more of a hero than a multimillionair with high tech gadgets going to classy soirés with his sidekicks, then being summoned by the police force by a signal in the sky they have especially for him.
Few movies are unpredictable, most are cheesy and unrealistic if you take a second to think about them, anything can be given a bad review if you look at it with enough cynicism. However if you take Spiderman 2 for what it is, it's a pretty decent movie. And it's above average for a superhero flick. Anyway that's my review.

I would be able to give you a review but...I just got home from there and the movie was sold out!!!
Posted by: mel | July 2, 2004 08:39 PM
Wow Mel, then its your lucky day. I mean misconstrued is going to save you at least $8. Now you know it was a horrible film.
Example:
All the corney one liners
Example: Bad Pick uplines: Punch me I'd bleed. (duh?)
Unrealistic:
Example: Peter Parker is in the bank, leaves his aunt to be destroyed by Doc Oc... and never do we see his Aunt Bring this MAJOR issue to the fore. Hello? Is this movie realistic... NO! Lets say I am a Superhero... and lets say we're oh at the mall... and this supervillan comes, and all you see is me running away. Next time you see me... are you just gonna be like... hey how are you... I almost died in the mall. Want some lunch? I'll buy.
Violence:
Example: Two guys fighting involving only slapping. HELLO?!
I laugh at those who find these not odd...

I just saw superman the movie one week ago. So I guess I am a tad behind. I have the date of 2009 in mind to see spiderman # 1.

Come on, Spidey 2 was a big notch above superhero movies in general if anything. You have got to love Peter Parker, he is just a nice, average Joe Schmoe geeky guy who tries hard. And....
Spoilers....
....as weird Al says in his Spiderman song, "..here comes the Green Goblin wearing that stupid power rangers mask." The one big weakness of the first IMHO. But Dock Ock is amazingly acted by Alfred Molina and very intelligently written. The mental struggle he had at the end trying to regain his old, benevolent self was very smart and not the old cheap routine of "slightly good scientist guy goes nutso and HAS to be elminated at the end by our hero." And the scene where Peter rescues the train and is discovered by the passengers was very cool. Ya gotta love a superhero movie with a lot of humanity and ya gotta love Aunt May smacking Ock in the side of the head with her cane. Mary Jane aint so bad either. :)

I will add (spoilers again if anyone cares)....
"Example: Two guys fighting involving only slapping. HELLO?!"
Huh??? You mean Spidey PUNCHING Ock in the FACE repeatedly, using his web to throw building scaffolds at him, shooting web blasts in his face and electrocuting him? lol And predictable? Ock turning good at the end was predictable? Hasn't happened in a major cultural sci fi or comic movie since Vader turned back if I'm not mistaken...
Just Molina's facial expressions were amazing when Peter was trying to talk some sense into him. He really looked disturbed about what he had become.
Anyways, keats and brother Houser nailed it. Sure it's not realistic but it is the most intelligent comic book movie ever made and you actually care about the characters as *real people* with real every day struggles.

A reply to Amber about Toby Keith:
"When you hear him you know it is Toby Keith"
Amber, when someone scrapes their nails on a chalkboard, you know it is someone scraping their nails on a chalkboard.
That doesn't mean you stick around to listen...

I don't like him just because I know it is him. I like him as a songwriter/singer. He is different is what I was getting at and I like that. I hate your music and you hate mine so what. Everyone is allowed to like something diffrent.
