City Mouse/Country Mouse

Well one of the greatest shocks to the system for someone as myself being in the greatness of a city such as New York, is the lack of country. It is amazing really the difference of what we all view as "normal". And I believe the difference in these things between a person raised in the country and city is most notable. A few examples...
There was a family in a congregation in the Bronx that took their kids to the ocean a few weeks ago. When they arrived their, the kids were afraid to get out of the car. They didn’t know what all the green stuff was (the grass). They were afraid it would hurt them.
Also one day while we were working in the building doing demolition, a huge dragonfly flew in the building. (Here is an excellent website to teach you about Dragonflys). And true it was of unusual size (wingspan about 4.5 inches), I don’t believe it required the shrieking and fear it brought upon the brothers I was with. (It was a Male Green Darner, an amazing lil bug which can actually fly up to 35 mph). I walked over to take a look and picked him up. Well what the reaction that brought. "Its gonna kill you man... you're crazy" shouted one brother from the LA area. To see him inch up in fear like a 3 year old was truly amazing. "How did you catch that... you're crazy dude!" It was just so odd to me that these people had never even seen such a creature. But they did appreciate it for its amazing beauty, creation of such variety and wonderfulness. Truly to be enjoyed for all times!
As I told him, one day he'll pick them up and not think of it at all, but true it may take a good 500-600 years for him to reach that point.
So alas, I retreat glad to have being raised in the country not a feared of the world which surrounds us that many people forget to notice, and sometimes never stop and pickup.

Oh yeah! New York is like a totally different country. The city never ceases to amaze me, the people never cease to amuse me, and the food...I never cease to pass up! Everything here is strong or tough...stong flavors, stong personalities, tough areas, tough times.
New York is a good experience but it's only good for just that, an experience, for us country folk it's hard to make it your perminant home. Being from Minnesota, Washington, and Montana previously, New York is a HUGE culture shock. And what amazes me, is the amount of people who are born and raised here and are content to just stay here forever...not go out traveling, exploring, on an adventure. But there are some really great people out here. Ya'll should take a trip to NYC one day(if you haven't already) it's a one in a million-or 6 million-experience.

Yeah, it is funny to note the differences in people from different cultures. I was raised a military brat so I got to live in both the big city (Seoul - 15 million people) and the country (Harvest, AL. Kind of suburban but country enough). But there are also similarities. Like Nina was talking about people who don't want to ever travel from where they were raised. I've meet city and country folk like that. I guess some people just don't like change. And as for city slickers being scared and in awe of grass and dragonflies, I'm just as amused for the country people who are in awe of the skyscrapers or fear the traffic and the density of people. Makes me wonder about the new system. Will we have cities or not? Of course not like the cities that exist now. More utopian of course. Areas of concentrated population. Or will it just be spread out country living?

Tre, you don't live in the country... its the suburbs... you have to live on a farm (or somewhere there is not a house right next to you) my definition at least. But I think there is greater reason to have fear in a big city than in the country. (True I've been in NYC 7 times, and 2 of those times someone was shot on the street I was standing, 3 times I have seen chalk outlines). But still I think both just require common sense not to get hurt. ANd their lies the problem, a city person doenst know country common sense, and usually a country person doenst know city common sense.
Oh and cities, well the Bible says God got mad when cities were built ...."fill the earth" I hope for no suburbs. And for other reading see your reasoning book under earth (see how the earths population will fit (if everyone living lived on the earth). (kinda sounds like suburbs... hmm we'll see...)

Well speaking of country it really is nice to get a break from a fast paced environment. I'm not freaked out of mutant dragon fly's or anything like that cause we got our fair share up in Canada, but it was pretty funny this morning when me and Lea went for a walk to the store, we went to cross the street and stood there for a good min and checked both ways to see if cars were coming...yah there were no cars, but there was a tractor coming up pretty slow. Too bad life couldn't always be that relaxed, soon enough though.

Also from someone who has lived in both types of places (Bieber, CA, population 500 and Philadelphia with about 1.5 mil in the city), and actually pretty much every type of town in between, I agree with the whole country common sense and city common sense, but I disagree on their equivalence. Lack of country commons sense will get you looked at funny or laughed at, but lack of city common sense, will get you in a lot more trouble (robbed or killed...ok maybe not that dramatic, but there's a good chance your car will get towed or ticketed).

Well depends how much of a country scene you are in ... lack of common sense in country could get you ...
gored by a bull...
biten by a snake...
starving in the wilderness...
or set on fire with out knowing what you are doing..

Jerm,
I may not have read close enough and you might have answered this question in the post, but did you take that dragonfly picture, or find it online?

Haha. Monstrous grass and killer dragonflies. Crazy city folk! :p

Man, that dragonfly must have been huge. Probably mutated from the NY City Sewers. Ah, the sewers. I remember many ole times Jerm and the gang would go in the manholes of the streets of Hville. So how many time have you gone under the streets of the BIG CITY??? Are there really crocodiles in the NY City Sewers? FACT or MYTH????

I remember pictures of you H-town kids in manholes. Knoxville has an odd part in the downtown/Old City area that is underground, but not part of the sewer system. There used to be an "Underground Knoxville" like Atlanta's, only smaller. You can still see the glass in the streets where the light used to shine up through them from below if you know where to look.
In the name of progess, though, they built over it with steel and concrete to make Gay Street (no snickering) a more suitable main street (or main "drag" coughcough) for Knoxville. It's pretty scary to go in to. Not because it's dark and dank and labyrinthian, but because it is the nervecenter for the town's homeless/crazy population. However, one could take some pretty amazing photos down there if they could manage to not be mugged or killed for their camera.
And no, there aren't crocodiles in subterranean New York...there are alligators. And then a fog comes up...from the sewers, and glows...in...the dark.

I laugh at D.A.'s comment. Laugh! Oh and the streets really named Gay Street? What were they thinking? Other than, you know, gay thoughts. . . I think I just got this comment edited, if not deleted. My count continues!

I used to live on a farm. I got a kick out of chasing calves around till one day when I really made a mom cow mad. Never did that again. And I never ran so fast either. Good times.
