Snow Patrol... Amazing Energy for Ambient Greatness
So lets say you drive to Washington DC, as a wedding photographer... its late, but you hear Snow Patrol is playing at one of the coolest Venues in DC... What are you gonna do?
Well go to the Midnight show of course, then get 3 hours of sleep and drive home.
Snow Patrol played the 9:30 club in DC Saturday Night. It was amazing but we arrived only minutes before they got on stage, and found few there... We walked right up to the stage ... close as you could get (as you see in the shots!).
What we were in for, was musical greatness! If you've never heard of the snow patrol... well you need to check them out, they are a great Indie Pop/Rock band with an energetic floating ambient sound. Confusing? Indeed.
But when you see them live (and As I must say you have to...) You'll be amazed. So much energy is poured out on the stage. You would think you were watching a really hard band, but actually they are quiet mello! Hard to believe when you watch how much they get into their music.
Also of note: I've never seen a band member cry on stage, but the base player teared up and started crying during one song. Now thats passion for your music.
But also sad, was he had taped down on the stage the lyrics for 3 songs... and we watched him read the lyrics for at least one of them. Guess its for when he goes blank (been there relate to that). But after the show, I got those lyrics, and a pic...
He told us he was enjoying his US tour, and how much better the DC crowd was than the Atlanta crowd. Hopefully they'll get some coverage in the states becuase these guyz have a ton of talent!
Anyways, check them out while they grace the states, a unique opportunity that you must take! And if you missed them, they said they'd be back this fall, Mark your calendar!
Watch a Clip of the show (set to the song Wow...) (my camera had no audio
Visit there site to listen to some more of their tunes and watch their video

Okay, don't pass out or anything, but I think I actually like one of your bands.

You know Jerm, I really didn't dig their new album. It sounded very over-produced from what I had come to know of them. I could see how they could translate well live, though.
Sorry I didn't reply to your text message! My phone was on the fritz and wouldn't let me access my messages. Also, I think you should just keep pitching to the Muse guy that all you want is for them to come back to Atlanta and let us finish the story. Get some back stage passes and do an interview.
Right.

Did my my dear sister just say she actually likes a band Jeremy likes? Is the end of the world to come tomorrow? Now we just need to teach her the wonders of Radiohead, then there might be hope for all of humankind...

Who DO you like, Amber?

DA... we dont wanna go there. And I actually like their new album pretty good... but after I saw them Live, now i realize how much power it actually holds
in my book album gets a 7
but as performers... they get a 10

Jerm,
You probably think I still like country, but I don't. I haven't listened to that in a long time. Well I do listen to Kenny Chesney, but even Kevin tells me to put that in.
After I had MacKenzie and had to be up in the wee hours of the night for the first 6 months, VH1 and MTV was the only thing that had shows on so my music selecton switched.
I like R&B (Yes I know Jerm still just as bad). I like Evenescence, Three Doors Down, Dave Matthews, Matchbox 20, etc. I also like Jessica Simpson. Okay, I love watching MacKenzie dance to her. When ever she starts screaming in the car it is "With You" over and over again.

I've tried for years to get her into more interesting music. I figured I'd start with the basics, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam - they were staples back then. I then realized she might need a little push, so I grasped the looks of Gavin Rossdale and ran with them - but Bush didn't really grab her. So I realized I was going about it all wrong. We tried Rachmoninov, Jonny Lang, Robert Johnson, Phil Kaeggy, Live (we got a hit there), STP, Dishwalla (she liked the lead singer), Hendrix, The Doors, Black Flag, Operation Ivy, The Tea Party, I Mother Earth, Gravity Kills, Silvershair, Everclear, Our Lady Peace, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, God Lives Underwater, Tabitha's Secret (even though they're MB20), For Squirrels, Sponge, The Toadies, Local H, The Nixons, U2 (she liked), Green Rode Shotgun, Ferguson's Blue...... Freakin' A, I trried everything. And all she would say is, "Clay Walker still rules in my book. He's cute and he's hot and that's all that matters!" I pretty much tried every kind of music I could and she just wouldn't get into it. Now she's into posers like J. Simp and MB20 and 3DD (who were cool when they didn't have the album out....) and other bands like Train..... bah.....
Posted by: keats | April 21, 2004 01:16 PM
First of all I liked Nirvana until I had to listen to Siby sing it on the drive from Florida to Tennesse The whole 9 days in Tennessee and then on the drive back again. Listening to him sing anything will get a person to dislike a group. What was that one song of theirs about the Mountain Top and a mop.
I also think I liked Everclear. What did Our Lady Peace do? I think I may have liked them too (Two o's :)).
Who is Dishwater?
Second of all who said anything about Train. That is Kevin's group. They have one song that I like, I complain everytime Kevin puts their CD in my car.
Posted by: Amber | April 21, 2004 01:26 PM
LIAR!!! Kevin would not sink that low!
And yeah, Siby did ruin a lot with his singing..... Our Lady Peace was cool to you for like 5 minutes. And Dishwalla sang Counting Blue Cars and Charlie Brown's Parents (those were the ones on radio anyways). I don't remember you liking the BAND Everclear, but you did drink an awful lot of it......
Posted by: keats | April 21, 2004 01:35 PM
Ask mom. Last time we were there she asked KEVIN if he brought Train. How does Charlies Parents go? Sounds familiar.

Amber, it's ok that you like crappy music. Some of us are going to need more time in the thousand years than others to reach perfection, that's all.
And there is no hope for getting you to like good music now anyway...you have already had a child.
The time has past.

I think I remember someone buying a Debbie Gibson tape when he was younger. (I Win :))
Posted by: Amber | April 21, 2004 02:18 PM
I was 7 and obviously influenced badly by my older sister who told me I'd be cool if I bought it. I promptly burned the tape and bought GNR instead..... and no, you don't win.... the war has just begun...... this was a low blow......
Posted by: keats | April 21, 2004 02:21 PM
Wait a minute here.... Just because I have a child I will never like good music. What are you saying? Does that mean that Kevin's music is crap too (2 o's)just because he also has a child? Because he likes the same kind of music You and Jerm like so doesn't that mean that your music would also be considered crap? And my Dad has also been borrowing CD's off of my brother so that would make his music crap, which is what you listen to.
Posted by: Amber | April 21, 2004 02:23 PM
Wasn't into Debbie Gibson, bro. Tarasa told me that I would be able to you that against you someday. What boy would go out and BUY a Debbie Gibson tape anyway?
Posted by: Amber | April 21, 2004 02:25 PM
Taysa told you what? You know, the use of proper English might be of benefit to someone who spends their days as a transcriptionist, wouldn't it? And I was obviously influenced by you. I mean, you psychologically tortured by me by playing your New Kids On The Block tapes on the highest volume setting - what was I to do? At the very least I saw the error of my ways, repented and atoned for my musical sins by evolving into a very level-headed person when it comes to music today. Unlike you, who just found herself sinking deeper and deeper into a quagmire of disgustingly inept musical taste, until today she has no personal interest of higher music, and finds herself sitting in a proverbial cesspool of guilt at the atrocities she is responsible for in her musical life.....
And what D.A. is saying is that once you have a kid you can't change your lack of taste. Kevin and Dad both had good taste in music before they sired a child. Think of it as "you can't teach an old dog new tricks".....

"And what D.A. is saying is..."
Nailed it, Sir Keats.
D.A., who has never owned any NKOTB and whose seed has not yet fallen on fertile soil.
"before they sired a child"
That cracked me up for some reason.

Keats. . .that was without a doubt one of the most beautiful things I've had the joy of reading. Amber, don't feel bad, I used to hate crappy music too. I still own Linkin Park CDs, not to mention compilation CDs. You know the ones where they take the top TRL videos and make it into a buyable CD. I shudder to think of the crap I've listened to and actually enjoyed. Now I too have seen the light, the light of good music, and it is truly refreshing. There is nothing better than listening to a band and realizing that you can never go back to the grating horror that was your previous musical debacle. I started out listening to Incubus, now I can't stand them (not sure what happened. Then there was my tragic love of bands like Linkin Park and Creed. What was I thinking? Thank god I never hopped on the gravy train that was Evanescence and Nickel Back. Those two bands make me want to hurl. In your defense 3 Doors Down had one or two good songs that were worth listening to, and Dave Matthews is a talented musician (though he's never actually shown any). But there's hope for you yet. Especially since you liked this band. Have you heard any Muse? Or The Sea and Cake (very quickly became my favorite band) Or if you don't want to let go of the R&B at least reach back into the crates and pull out some Bobby Womack, some James Brown, some Sly and the Family Stone, some Earth Wind and Fire, a little Sade, and you'll definitely be starting out right. Or some Delfonics, some EARLY Michael Jackson (like Off the Wall, some Temptations, some O'Jays, some Angie Stone, some Lauryn Hill, or a little Anita Baker, and then you'll be on the way to appreciating good music. Don't forget about Roy Ayers, or Con Funk Shun, or Larry Graham, or what about Prince (though really I wouldn't recommend much by him) or try some Ben E. King. Basically what I'm saying is, this thing called pop, what you see on MTV, BET, VH1, CMTwhatever, its music, but its not art. There is a difference. Anyone can sing, or hit a high note to canned music, but only true artists can make you want to sing along, make you want to cry, make you feel how they feel with the WAY they sing, the WAY they hit that note. That's art. *Sniff*

Thank you for saying you don't like Nickel Back. I was just talking about them out in service Saturday with Kev and Michael Denton (Kevin likes them). They do stuff that sounds like everyone else which is pretty much my problem with a lot of the music out there. I don't like when the only way you can tell one group apart from the other is by memorizing which songs they sing (I get Nickel Back and Default mixed up). I like the groups to be different.

woah this place is gettin' hostile
I liked the new snow patrol album--it's very "listener-friendly"(which can be both good and bad)
although it was a lil' distrurbing to see that it was featured on a WB show last night-always a bad sign! (i know, i know -why was i watching a WB show!?? i was home w/ a migrane OK!)
but anyway that looked like a decent venue in DC!
hopefully we can show 'em a good time here in SF
i will def try to make thier show -even though there's at least like five i wanna go to that week!! (the SF music scene is finally getting it's act together!)

Posted by: kael | April 21, 2004 11:48 PM
Yeah, some of the other bands are pretty mainstream or a little out there, but the idea is to get Amber going in the right musical direction. You should list a few bands you didn't see listed so she can try them out...

Hey yes Snowpatrol are great live. we saw them late last year when they supported another UK band called Athlete (you should also check them out www.athlete.mu)in London. And their album Final Straw is not over produced who ever said that! They are one those bands who have recieved little attention and have only been recognised from their 3rd album! Anyway, they are eyeballjuicingly good live and rarely for support had people getting up in excitement on other peoples shoulders for the irishmen. The bassist didn't cry for us though... Man you Americans know how to bring out emotion!
Posted by: meg & soph | April 23, 2004 08:56 AM
Hello there Meg and Soph!
I say that the new album is overproduced because listening to their older efforts, there is a certain, more personal quality to them. Final Straw, while a good album, just doesn't seem as "close" as the rest. It's a danger that all bands who are not thrown onto the radio face when they start to grow as musicians and get more mainstream. My favorite example of this is Tommy Walters (ex-Eels bassist) solo album as Abandoned Pools. Great riffs, decent lyrics, distinct voice, good marketing (I still have my robot pin) got him onto several TV show soundtracks. The album as a whole though did not sound like what he was going for musically at all. The producer threw in everything but the kitchen sink and summarilly made everything sound like it was trying to be something it wasn't.
That's how Final Straw makes me feel. I love the lyrics and instrumentation, but it just feels distant to me. That being said, I would say that the songs would translate very well live, allowing them to keep their original feel.
It's good to hear that the show went so well. That gives me hope.

they're concert gave me goosebumps!
honestly the 1st time i heard them was right before theconcert. i trust Jeremy's input on music so i was all about going..... im so glad we went! Snow Patrol converted me to side to side head banging verses front to back ....doesn't hurt as bad :)
i will say that it is rare to see a band produce that much emotion in me at a concert.....totally a true fan now!!

Amber, Kenny Chesney rocks!

How can you rock if you are from Luttrell TN? I mean I used to go there for my Book Study. Cant say in any way I was a fan... they do have a stop light now though.
There actually used to be a congregation there... but it disappeared in time.

Yo Javann, I agree with what you say about canned music. Music and not art. Very well put. However, and I mean this stricly as a pal and not as someone who's trying to be a jerk, saying something like "Dave Matthews is a talented musician (though he's never actually shown any)" can come back and bite you cause from a technical music theoretical standpoint their supeior to the other artists you mentioned (except perhaps, ironically enough, Incubus, who've delved into rhelmes of odd meters and unusual commen meters and key changes and fast solos many times). E.G. I like Muse from what I've heard of them and I heard this awesome Celtic punk band last weekend which I consider freakin brilliant, but of course I can hear that to play their music you dont need as much musical talent as you would to play a DMB song. This is just the music theorist in me coming out. Music isn't about theory, of course, it's about resonenance and how that high note makes you as an induvidual feel. But the bottom line is just dont say anything you cant back up in some way. Or Jerm might have to edit your posts.

Hey there D.A.
I appreciate your opinion and yes the Eels comments did back it up very well, early Eels stuff is better and less... same-old-same-old. I was listening to Final Straw again the other day and by "over-produced" do you mean similar to everything else/nothing-new-here kinda theme? In which case I agree with you, as some of the vocals remind me of Pete Yorn and other Pete Yorn figures (late Elliot Smith, Brendan Benson...). I think Pete Yorn is great but several tracks on Final straw do have a strange similarity!

I have the latest album of Snow patrol..it's great!I love spitting games, chocolate, wow and run..once when I listened run I started to cry because the song is so beatiful and sad, it tells about goodbyes...I hope that they are going to visit here in Finland, because I would so like to see them... People go and buy the album Final straw..it's great!
Hellos to Riina...
