In the News with a Quote

Well if you have not heard, McDonalds will soon remove their supersize items from the menu. This is so us "Stupid Americans" (the quotes be my own maybe I should just say "Stupid Humans" yes that is better) will not eat ourselves to death. (Has anyone ever heard of common sense and will power?)

But why stop there? If people are to stupid to realize they should not eat massive amounts of food we need to take preventitive measures everywhere. I mean when you buy a gallon Ice cream what prevents me from eating the whole thing? I could be intelligent and know I shouldn't eat the whole thing, but that is not logical to think I have that capability. So Basically everything should be sold in single serving sizes only! My point keep the supersize fries and call it "Family Size".

On a further note. It was reported today JAMA has stated that obesity from poor eating habits and inactivity will soon replace smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Sad indeed. So obviously something needs to happen... what? I refer to a couple of my favorite artist for this

'Most people gaze neither into the past nor the future; they explore neither the truth nor lies. They gaze at the television'

-Radiohead

Burn your tv in your yard
And gather ’round it with your friends
And warm your hands upon the fire
And start again

-Toad the Wet Sprocket

(And I am proud to note I rid myself of Cable yesterday... not that I ever watched it anyway).

Good job on the cable-ridding. Wish I could, but I don't pay for it. Not my choice.

What about the computer we are all sitting at right now? Do you think that in 10 years (provided the system is still here) the Internet will be the new form of self waste? There's a lot more to look at online, and with faster connections, better graphics displays and the growth of wi-fi you could be online 24/7. Then you have the integration and realisation of the virtual internet, and of course home automation becoming more and more mainstream. Burgers and fries seem to be a problem of the past all of a sudden. Anti-smoking campaigns have proven to be a large factor in the decline of smoking and smoking related deaths in the past ten years, and with video game consoles and computers suddenly popping up in most family homes you have a new reason to sit and stare. Children today come home from school to play PS2 or Xbox and surf the net. I came home from school and ran around outside all day. My doctor gets all his information from a computer - he sits in front of it and reads the questions it tells him to ask. My 80 year old grandmother uses the computer all of a sudden to keep up with things and is interested in home automation so she can take it easy. Yeah, maybe eating SuperSized fres isn't the best thing, but like Jeremy says, maybe it's the fact we we're lazy and can't remember how to use our brains because we're toasted from TV or internet use that we're all dying of cancer and diabetes in the first place.

Amen Radiohead!!

i think one link to the stupidity of humans is that the T.V. plays out to be the essential baby sitter hence many brain cells lost at youth.

me

Yes the internet.. actually society its horrible... I sit all day in front of a computer... so as to design spacecraft that people can sit in... then i sit in my car...

man this "NASA gut" has to go...

At least the internet does allow creation (well those who create)... so there is some brain usage)

brain usage... the goal of this site.

and while everyone is ranting about things started out as good idea's but taken by "the man" in victorious attempt to dumb american society, i feel a sort of fear that we can verywell realize and recognize the downfall of most of our fellow citizens BUT do nothing about it. then i begin to fear that it is virtually unavoidable to only become dumber as we get older. i mean things just become easier and lazier, and unless we want to go into total omish existence we will have to "keep up with the times", thus becoming lazier and using our brains less and less.

The internet may be looked at as more forgivable since it's by and large used for communication (at least in some form), and communication is an important thing for anyone to practice. Communication is one reason people who are anti-TV are anti-TV; they see the stagnant condition of today's stupid kids and middles aged adults, they see that they wake up at 6 AM, go to work all day, and come home to watch TV for 7 hours. They simply don't do anything, and the time flies by in lighting quick 30-minute increments.

At least the internet, as Jerm said, gives you tons of different ways to create, talk, research, read, et cetera. Of course, reading can be just as harmful if you do nothing but sit and read. Then again, perhaps it makes use of parts of the brain that TV doesn't utilize. It makes sense to me.

Oh Seth, you forgot to mention Nirvana in that last post of yours. What's up? You sick? Nirvana is a mainstay in any topic for you.

Not sick, just forgot. *Breaking News* Just found out my wife is pregnant, so that's the excuse I have for the forgetfulness. I'll fix it right now.
The internet is, in my opinion, probably the biggest threat to overall stupidity we have - for the future anyways. It won't be long before the TV and computer are intgrated into one box, as is already happening. TV programs and internet surfing will be available without having to pull out the laptop. TV shows that interact with internet sites already exist and they can only become more interactive. It's becoming more and more popular to order takeout online, use online phone systems and - as I said yesterday - use home automation to vacuum, mow your lawn, walk the dog and do other menial tasks around the house as well as take care of other needs like turning on lights. Bluetooth and other programs are enabling our food to tell us when they are going bad or going out of stock and automatically re-order it online only to be delivered by the grocery store for our convenience. I could go on forever about this but you get the point.
And just because something is creative doesn't necessarily put it in a good light. Yes, when used wisely the internet is a very powerfultoo, but then so is the TV. Let's face it, if we sit and watch the Discovery Channel, TLC (prior to all those Trading Spaces and Clean Sweep shows) or even Tech TV for 7 hours a night we will be using our brain power and learning much more. Is it any better to sit and browse the net for 7 hours building websites or looking for ways to stimulate our creative juices? Maybe, maybe not, depending on whether or not you want to focus on overall laziness instead of just mental or physical laziness. Looking for information on the net doesn't make me want to get up and cook dinner anymore than watching football on sunday makes me want to get up and take out the trash.
(here it comes) Of course, I could sit and listen to Nirvana all day long, with no internet and no TV, so I guess I'm no better off. Now to waste time on Ebay looking or Nirvana CD's...

keats you 'll be happy to know i didnt read all that instead... i'm going running on the beach.

Yeah, it was a bit long, but the amazing thing is that even though you didn't read you were intelligent to know the point and go outside and run rather than sit and do nothing. You never cease to amaze me...
