Wacked Fact Wednesday ... Cereal Edition

Well if you havent heard... This Saturday is National Eat A Bowl Of Cereal Simulataneously With People You Hardly Know day (NEABOCSWPYHK for short).
This weekend namely Saturday I think we shall assemble some folks together for this great annual event. But you ask ....
"Jeremy ol chap... why do this seems a bit ridicolous to me..."
Well my response.... why exactly are you talking with a british accent... although it is cool none the less.
But anyways, All start thinking of your favorite cereal for NEABOCSWPYHK, and be sure to send us your pictures of you enjoying your favorite cereal.
I cant say Captain Crunch is my favorite cereal, but I do like it...(unless you eat to much and get that sandpaper effect on the roof of your mouth)... but it is high quality stuff.
But for the wacked fact for wednesday. Did you know Captain Crunch was also the name of a early hacker of the phone systems? His "handle" came from the inclusion of a plastic whistle in Captain Crunch cereal in the 1960's which could, with proper manipulation, send out a control tone that would affect telephone systems of the time. Thus he would get free long distance phone calls, well until he recieved 2 years of prison.... where those free phone calls turned into just one free phone call.
Anyway, add your cereal stories (and your favorite) to this wacked fact wednesday cereal edition.

Actually I think it was 1972 to be exact and i would consider him more of a Phreaker than a Hacker, John T. Draper, he went on invent the "little blue box" (high tech version of the whistle that produced different pitched tones). The Cap'n went on to show off his device to the Home Brew Computer Club, yada yada yada, enter Steve Wozniak and the first Intel Processor, yada yada yada, the first "Apple I" is born.....
I know I'm a nerd, but it pays the bills...
Did i mention a blind kid showed him this trick with the 2600hz whistle.

yep but he took the credit...
good use of google casey..
and by the way what is a Phreaker as compared to a hacker? (yes you now have to do more goole searching..)

actually google wasnt really involved just some interesting instructors who like to tell stories, and lots of Discovery Channel and TechTV.
A Phreaker is basically an early "cracker" who developed the art of manipulating the phone system for various uses (free long distance), AKA the "phone phreak", and phreaking.
So which came first the Hacker or the Phreaker?
Well as the Phone Phreaks began to be arrested for "Fraud by Wire" and the Phone Companys slowly patched up their system, this gave way to a new form of Hacking, using a modem and an old green screen PC, and a phone # list of companys modem lines, or by using some social engineering to get the numbers, yada yada yada...
I wish i still had the article about the 9 greatest hacks/phreaks, i could share with you.
Theres not many Phone Phreaks anymore, but the ones their are keep a low profile and casually beat the system in new ways. No more blue boxes.

Ok, back to favorite cereals. I always had a thing for Cookie Crisp..Do they still make that?? Anyways, what a horrible idea for a cereal but perfectly appealing to kids!! You get your cookies and your milk all in one bowl...a truly winning combination!! ;) I also still have a thing for Lucky Charms...gotta love those sugary marshmallows!! Can't wait 'til NEABOCSWPYHK!!!

Clusters. Yup, the best cereal there is. And there is the cute squirrel on the cover. I remember a commercial that used to play for "Nuttin' Honey". Very good commercial, can't say I remember seeing them in the stores, of course this is a few years ago. I hope I remember to eat cereal on Saturday. :) Have fun if I forget.

Grapenuts. I call that gravel and milk. Hmm hmm good. Heat it up in the microwave, and let it sit in the milk and it won't crack your teeth. I'm definitely with Tommy though, my house had a strict no sugary breakfast rule (even our syrup was sugar free. . .ecckk) so we used to dump scoopfuls of sugar into our cereals. Want Rice Krispies, grab the Special K, dump a few scoop fulls of sugar in stir till at least part of the sugar dissolves. Nothing like krispy rice cereal. And then lets not forget how much better shredded wheat tastes with tons of cereal. We tried adding chocolate to our milk once for all the chocolate varieties of cereal, but we never figured out how to mimic fruit loops. Oh well. My favorite cereal? Its a tie between Peanut Butter Crunch and Honey Bunches of Oats. And clusters. Oh yeah and I really like Cookie Crisp. COOOOKIE CRisp. . .hehe hehe

actually we rarely got sugar cereals too...
so some of my favorites was cherrios, life (kinda sweet and mikey liked it), and corn flakes.... but all these were ruined if you put sugar on them, i was a purist.

does anyone remember Trix, or Pops? How about Count Chocula, and Frosted Mini Wheats? Favorite cereal cartoon character had to be Tony the Tiger.
Mmm, sugared cereal....
Their GREAT!!

apple cinnamon cheerios!
don't think it's around anymore, but that stuff was awesome. growing up, my house was also under a sugar ban (most of the time) so anything else besides plain cheerios, corn flakes or rice krispies was a real treat. the occasional frosted flakes or fruit loops were good too... but to me, apple cinnamon cheerios was the best.
