Flight of the Design

LaunchDayHang5 (Medium).JPG

Oh about a year and a half ago I worked on the design of a telescope tube that was to fly to look at the High Energy spectrum of the light spectrum. Last week it actually flew, true it ran into some issues for data collection. Yet, it survived landing and was recovered therefore there will be future flights as well.

These experiments go up by balloon to roughly 120,000 feet, basically outside the atmosphere. The balloon when inflated is the size of about 2 football fields, huge eh?

You can go to the HERO page and read a daily account of the flight.

You can also watch video of the flight.

So will new galaxies be discovered? Well maybe not on this flight, but possibly in the future. So maybe one day you'll be looking at a whole Misconstrued Universe when you look up to the night sky.

BTW, another experiment I worked on, Deep Space Test Bed, which will test the effects of radtiation is being readied for its test flight. You can go to a live webcam here and see it being worked on.

Way cool Jer! You should be proud. It didn't crash-great for you and NASA (job security).

By the way...to let you know that "your not so special"... I did something similar/like that HERO launch last month in my backyard...I just didn't tell anybody.

Being that I work at UPS I would have to agree with Buff :)

Where's Javann? Where's Javann? That's all I seem to hear now a days. Well, here I am, and I'm very much alive, thank you very much. I've just been very busy lately, running around giving people packages, hitting buildings and what not. That's right, I hit a building. In my defense, it was a moving building. . .because, you see, the earth itself is moving and. . .okay yeah, that was really stupid. But anyway, I'm alive, and still me. I'd prove that, but I think I already did with that moving building bit, so my job here is done. I'll now go find something productive to do.

Javann when did you hit a building? If i hit anything with my UPS truck we get fired. Did you get fired?

Posted by: Buff at May 22, 2005 10:40 AM

No. FedEx likes its employees. That's what happens when you don't have a union. Trust, respect, valued employees. Job security. All of those things disappear when you get a union. But UPS has all those things right? Right? Hello?

Posted by: Unapologetically Javann at May 23, 2005 10:51 AM

I am supervisor at UPS and I very much trust, value and respect my employees!!!! Without them I wouldn't have a job and there is no way I could do it all by myself!! In the time I've worked there I have always been treated fairly and with respect, even before I was in a management position. :)

Posted by: Becky from MI at May 23, 2005 02:56 PM

Yeah, my supervisor trusts me that I wouldn't hit a building. They don't just let anybody drive a truck. Sounds like you need the Union cause you might need them to get you your job back when you get fired for running over buildings. Without a union in your workplace your employers can fire you without any reason. But sounds like they got a good reason too.

One question...why does Fedex have a picture of a dog carrying a package on their trucks? Is that what they think of their drivers?
JK :D

Posted by: Becky from MI at May 23, 2005 05:46 PM

Just to inform ya'll fedex has no union which is true .......but they also dont have to pay union dues for a company that can still lay you off when theres no work. When the economy dipped after sept 11 fedex didnt lay off any employees.............oh and who likes poo brown uniforms.............come on am i right? They even wear brown socks ....now thats sad...............haha.

Posted by: fedexdave at May 23, 2005 06:52 PM

i'll agree with ya dave....only cause you've hooked me up with some cheap fedex rates in the past.....75% off sweet..People.Service.Profit....alright.

Posted by: lea at May 23, 2005 06:56 PM

The question of the dog remains!!

Posted by: Becky from MI at May 23, 2005 08:07 PM

But dogs are so cute........ive got one on my own car.......just for no apparent reason at all..............come on their mans best friend.

Posted by: fedexdave at May 23, 2005 09:12 PM

Yeah! I got laid off for bout a week or two, but I got the same amount of pay. Man, imagine that, gettin paid the same amount without workin. I'd wear Brown anytime for that.

Posted by: Buff at May 23, 2005 10:12 PM

I agree dogs are cute, I wasn't saying they aren't....I was just wondering what connection there is between dogs and delivering packages?? Maybe I can't understand it bc I work for UPS!?!? OR Maybe it is just an unsolved mystery?!?! Does the dog at least have a name???

Posted by: Becky from MI at May 24, 2005 03:11 AM

7:31, 1 minute past closing...that is when we got to FedEx last Thursday in Madison, and they would not open the doors...Evil people...

Posted by: Jeremy at May 24, 2005 12:02 PM

Try accidentally having a package delivered Fedex when your roommate works for UPS!!! Not my brightest day :P

Posted by: Gabrielle at May 24, 2005 05:45 PM

man... ups ... fedex? hey who ever delievers my package and doesn't require me drive a billion miles to pick it up... i like you. Those companies which deliver when 80% americans are home... i like them...

but anyways. who is that? well... i dont even know.

Posted by: itzjerm at May 25, 2005 11:30 AM

FYI.. If UPS tries to deliver a package and you're not home, in most cases you can leave a more convenient address to have it delivered to if you won't be home the next time they attempt to deliver.

:)

Posted by: Becky from MI at May 26, 2005 03:02 AM

Well if you have a package that has to be signed for and the UPS driver leaves a delivery notice, you can sign the back of the delivery notice and tell the driver a secure location to leave the package. The only time you can't do that is if you live at a place where there is no where to hide the thing, like an apartment.
