Today I find myself in Utah, the home of many things, ok (not to many things)… but the home of the Mormon. Yesterday I spoke with a Mormon. Two things that I found interesting.
1) High Morals: Bibles view of morals held, also any alcohol viewed as wrong
2) Low Morals: Mormons believe you should fight for your country. Therefore, I was told during World War II there was Mormons fighting on both the axis and allies sides of the war.
3) Future Hope: Mormons believe that there are 3 levels of hope. If you're not a good person, what you receive is everlasting life in a paradise. Interesting there worst case scenario, is my hope.
Oh well... thats enough for now. But just for a note. If you ever do spell check, and the word Mormon is inside the text. Well it will change it to moron. (made that mistake in high school once as I wrote about the Moron Trail).
Are you gunna swim in the Salt Lake?? Ya gotta do that. If you do watch out for the sea gulls, man they are crazy there.
Posted by: judi at May 23, 2004 04:25 PMI always thought that was interesting that their last resort was our hope. Did you know that they only wear white shirts to represent purity? It's in connection w/ the whole washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the lamb thing. I learned that when they came to our memorial last year.
Posted by: mel at May 24, 2004 09:48 AMYeah, Mormons are kinda neat, if you really talk to them. I never could understand all of their beliefs, partly because I found the Book Of Mormon to be a little far-fetched. I never really saw how they substantiated their claim that Jesus came to America, or that God's kingdom would be in Missouri - or most of their other beliefs. A lot of their beliefs do come close to paralelling ours, but they're a little off. And that John Smith must have been a little off too. Every time I read about him he get's weirder and weirder....
Posted by: keats at May 24, 2004 10:15 AMOne of my best and only friends in high school (other than all the ladies) was a mormon. I went to his house once and he had like a trillion brothers and sisters. Apparently, you have more of a chance to get to heaven if you have tons of kids. I never understood how that worked. There are some similarities from speaking with him, but they rely heavily on the book of mormon instead of the bible. Thats where they go wrong. I witnessed to him and he recognized the truth but never did anything because his dad kept buying him stuff as long as he stayed mormon. Its pretty sad if you have to bribe someone to stay and its also sad if you accept the bribes and know better. Last I have heard from him, he was in Mexico on his unimaginable 2 year preaching mission. Can you believe that? They have to preach for 2 whole years. They are real zealous to devote 2 whole years of their life. Try 10, 20, 50, or even 80 years.
Well, thats my take on the Mormonians......

Posted by: D.A. at May 24, 2004 01:17 PMOur instructor at pioneer school has spoken with more than a few brothers who used to be Mormons. He said one thing they all had in common was that the Witnesses they encountered in their door to door work were always very nice and warm. Everyone else was usually rude. Some food to chew on. I recently heard that Mormons believe we're doing god's work and that we will rceeive a heavenly reward, just that we will be on one of the "lower levels" because not totally mormon kosher? Haha. Also, in my elementary/junior high school me, my brother and sister went to school with three girls who were mormon, they and their brothers were very nice. Their dad is my dentist and I have gotten a few good opportunities to witness to both he and his wife who is his assistant. The last time I was there she told me about her daughter who is now a missionary in China and I was able to tell her about our missionary work. Just planting tiny little seeds sometimes helps.
Posted by: Dylan at May 24, 2004 09:02 PMA sister in my hall used to study with a woman who was mormon. She was very confused by her own teachings that she grew up with. She said that half of them didn't make sense and the other half of them well made less sense. It was amazing to see her change and to realize what she was learing was truth.
Here where I live we get mormons all the time preaching door to door. In fact one day it was the funniest thing my brother went to the door and my brother says to him to be honest "I don't want to waste your time but I just wanted to let you know that I am very active in my own religion. I would be interested in having a discussion with you but I am busy at the moment." The one guy then turns and says, "Oh don't worry its not like we are Jehovah's Witnesses or anything." My brother then turned to him and said, "Oh well I am one of Jehovah's witnesses." That was the end of that conversation! lol I am sure he will think twice before saying that again!
Posted by: javaprincess at May 24, 2004 09:48 PMWe had some Mormons come to our house a few times to try and study with us. They couldn't really get all the way through their teachings, because they would start with the simple things and Dad and I would go, "Wait, wait, wait...where are you getting this from?" and they would have to try and explain ideas in the bible that somehow were supposed to corralate with the Book of Mormon. It just doesn't add us.
The truth clicks even with people who don't believe it. You can see their faces and minds scramble when you blatantly disprove the Trinity or other false doctrines and they backslide into, "Well...uh...you just have to believe!" Riiiiight...because thats the way that Jesus did it, correct? Not explaining anything, just saying that you had to believe?
Also, I'm not trying to knock anyone with the following, it's a real question, so if anyone here has the answer, let me know:
Isn't a statement such as, "I went to school with boys that were Mormon" akin to someone saying, "I went to school with boys who were Witness" in relation to us? Just a grammatical query.

Posted by: D.A. at May 25, 2004 08:09 AMWitness is singular, but Baptist, Methodist, Mormon, Catholic, etc. refers to the religion which also would be singular and/or an individual's religious affiliation. J'Witness refers to the individual while J'Witnesses refers to the group as a whole only because is not the Title of a religious belief, but a group of individuals who refer to themselves as one of the whole. If you wish to use the Title of the religion, you could say "...was Christian". (Grammatically speaking)
Posted by: yt at May 25, 2004 12:29 PMWell I always hear such and such is/are Catholic ect. But yeah, the plural form of Mormon might look better in reading form.
